Harbourfront Centre

Client: MJMA

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Located off Queens Quay in downtown Toronto, Harbourfront Centre is a year-round entertainment hub featuring live music, dance performances, family activities, food festivals, and art exhibitions.

As part of a revitalization project for its outdoor space, the former ice rink and pond were transformed into a fog rink plaza—a visually striking and functionally innovative feature that enhances visitor experience while preserving the waterfront’s aesthetic and environmental integrity.

Working on a team led by MJMA Architecture & Design, Aqua Plans Aquatic Consultants Inc. designed and engineered the fog system, which consists of three distinct zones, each increasing in fog density toward the plaza’s centre. With over 600 ruby-orifice fog nozzles, high-pressure water (400–3200 psi) is atomized into billions of 1–15-micron droplets, replicating the effect of natural fog. The installation not only offers an interactive and playful space for families but also provides a cooling effect, lowering ambient temperatures by up to 17°C depending on weather conditions.
